The 24-Hour Rule: A Simple Framework for Deciding If Your Pet's Symptom Can Wait

You don’t need an encyclopedia of symptoms. You need one rule you can actually remember at 10pm when your pet does something unexpected. Here it is.

The rule

If a mild symptom hasn’t improved — or has gotten worse — in 24 hours, it’s time to talk to someone.

That’s it. It’s not a diagnosis. It’s a timer that turns “I’ll just keep watching” into “I said I’d check in by now, so let’s check in.”

How to use it

The moment you notice something — a skipped meal, mild limping, a bit of lethargy, occasional sneezing — mentally (or literally) set your 24-hour mark. In that window, keep doing what you’d normally do: watch for changes, make sure they’re still eating, drinking, and acting mostly like themselves.

If the symptom is gone, or clearly improving, by your mark — great, no action needed. If it’s the same, or worse — that’s your signal to stop guessing and get a real answer, virtual or in person.

The exception that matters

The 24-hour rule is for mild, isolated symptoms — not for red flags. Difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, a swollen or painful abdomen, collapse, or a wound that won’t stop bleeding don’t get a 24-hour window. Those get attention now.

A rule you’ll actually remember beats a symptom list you’ll never fully read.

Why this works better than “just wait and see”

“Wait and see” with no endpoint quietly turns into two days, then three, and each hour adds a little more anxiety without adding clarity. A fixed checkpoint does the opposite — it gives your “wait and see” instinct a clear, calm boundary, so you’re not re-litigating the decision every hour.

Where Vetgo fits in

When your 24-hour mark hits and the answer isn’t obvious, that’s exactly when a quick Vetgo consult earns its keep — a fast, real answer from a licensed veterinary professional, without the whole vet-day ordeal, so you can act with confidence instead of another round of Googling.
