Your vet writes a prescription. You go to fill it — and the price makes you pause. Maybe there’s a fee just for the prescription itself. Maybe the same medication seems to cost more here than somewhere else. You’re not imagining it, and you’re not wrong to ask questions.

Why prescription pricing feels so opaque

Veterinary prescriptions can involve more than the medication itself — there may be a dispensing or prescription fee layered on top, and prices for the same drug can vary meaningfully between a clinic and an outside pharmacy. None of that means someone’s trying to trick you. It usually just means nobody’s ever laid it out clearly.

What you’re allowed to do

In most cases, you can ask your vet for a written prescription and fill it at an external pharmacy instead of the clinic. This is a completely normal, respectful request — it doesn’t damage your relationship with your vet, and a good clinic won’t make you feel awkward for asking.

Questions worth asking, calmly

• “Can I get a written prescription for this?”

• “Is there a fee for that, and how much?”

• “Is this medication available at a lower cost elsewhere, and is there any reason I shouldn’t fill it there?”

That last question matters — some medications genuinely need to come from the clinic (compounded drugs, certain controlled substances, or anything requiring in-house monitoring). A good vet will tell you plainly when that’s the case, instead of leaving you to guess.
